‘Climate change has become a reality’

Kohima, March 9 (MExN): The 2nd edition of the Climate Change Awareness Programme for Students (C- CAPS) was held at Northfield school, Kohima on March 7.
Altogether, seven schools from Kohima attended the awareness programme which was organized by Nagaland State Climate Cell (NSCCC) under Nagaland Science & Technology Council (NASTEC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of Nagaland and Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of Nagaland supported by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).
The programme began with a brief introduction of NSCCC. A power point presentation on basic climate science was presented based on which the participants were quizzed.
Special guest for the occasion, Supongnukshi, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), Department of Environment Forests and Climate Change, Government of Nagaland and State Nodal Officer for climate change gave an overview of the State Action plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) and interacted with the participants. Speaking on the occasion, he stated that climate change has become a reality and highlighted the urgency to tackle the effects of climate change in Nagaland. He stressed on the need for a concentrated effort to create awareness among all sections of the society to adapt to climate change, thereby overcoming its challenges.
Hands on activities to understand climate change and its effects were undertaken by the participants followed by group presentations based on the activity. Taking an audio visual approach, a short documentary on the stated topic was also screened to freshen and energize the minds of the participants, the organizers said in a press statement on Monday.
All the participants were inducted into the Climate Ambassador’s programme of the NSCCC wherein the inductees were given official badges and a pledge based on 4 major points- Remain Optimistic, Learn more on Climate Action, Share knowledge experience and ideas and collaborate- organize into communities.
