Nagaland State Climate Change Cell (NSCCC) was established in April 2017 under the Nagaland Science and Technology Council (NASTEC); an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Nagaland. The Cell was set up under the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE), one of the eight missions of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Cell focuses on issues underlined and prioritized in the Nagaland State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC).

Key objectives

  • ■ Assessment of vulnerabilities and risk due to climate change in the state in Agriculture, Forest, Water, Urban, and Energy Sector. The NSCCC will take up agri-forestry as its area of research priority.
  • ■ Institutional capacity building (NSCCC, Government departments and stakeholders) to attain the capability to understand and handle climate change programmes and to find the solutions to address the problem of climate change in the state.
  • Study traditional knowledge system and coping mechanisms for community participation and exploration of linking it with formal knowledge.
  • Create Climate Change Knowledge Portal for assisting decision makers in framing appropriate policy interventions, for all sectorial line departments, institutes/universities, public, civil societies and non-governmental organisations.
  • ■ To establish a network for research collaboration with various stakeholders within and beyond the state.
